The
Roper Mountain Astronomers' monthly viewing sessions is what we
call our 'RMA Star Parties'. Arrival times at the monthly star
gazes are usually a little before sunset. It is a good idea to
allow left-over daylight to set up the telescopes. We use the Star
Parties to bring out visitors and friends to introduce them to the
wonders of the night skies. If the weather cooperates a few people
stay all night and don't leave until sunrise. Everyone observes
whatever they are interested in and share it with others. There is
never a fixed schedule. Some may be getting used to their new
scope, while others are checking out current events such as
comets, asteroids and meteor showers..
Those who come to a star party should turn off their car lights as
soon as possible (there is usually a sign telling you to turn your
lights off beyond this point), and give warning before they turn
their lights on to leave. Don't use a flashlight unless it has a
deep red filter over it. Few things irritate astronomers more than
loosing their night vision. It takes at least 15 minutes to get it
back, longer if the person was observing very dim objects such as
faint galaxies. Feel free to ask anyone what they are looking at
and if you can take a look. Most astronomers love sharing their
passion. But get permission before turning any knobs.
No equipment is necessary at a star party. Just come to enjoy and
to share the night sky. But dress as warmly as you can.
